Shreds is the first song Eric and i ever did for Songfight!. Amazingly, it won, but that was most likely due to the fact that we told all our friends, family, and anyone else that would give us the time of day to go check it out and vote for it. I sort of found out about Songfight! by accident, and Eric and I were living on the same street in San Francisco at the time, and would get together at least once a week and hang out, play guitar, bounce song ideas off each other. We had been writing songs and playing together for a number of years, so we could work pretty quick when we were motivated to. One of the few constants at the time was how we would always break for dinner and walk up to King Foot Subs on the corner of Haight and Divisadero and get the special beef teryaki sub, which was melt in your mouth to die for. We turned so many people on to the beef teryaki sub from King Foot. Anyways, the title for that weeks Songfight! was "shreds" and pretty much all we could come up with was the visual of shredding lettuce. I had the idea to sort of spoof Bob Marley's "Natty Dread", mostly because it just rhymed with shreds. So we ended up sort of mixing ideas, as the music and arrangement is sort of a take off on "Natty Dread" (with kazoos instead of horns), the lyrics are written about a fictitious submaker from King Foot Subs. I've always wondered if anyone has ever asked them about brody's "shreds". That would be funny.
